Just a Little Scary

I'm not big into scary.  I think we are here to love each other, not be afraid of life and the dark and the family pet.  Even Halloween I try to make 'sweet' not scary.  I put up a few decorations and give candy to the Trick or Treaters, but I'm not much of a Halloween celebrator.
Well, I do have a favorite cookie I make just for Halloween.
  (Try to act surprised.)
I take my Christmas Ginger Bread Cookie Recipe and do one thing different.

I add those little hard pieces of the brown sugar - I collect them in a ziplock baggie for a few months and them dump them in when I'm mixing up the cookies. Just a tablespoon or two, it doesn't change the flavor of the cookie. Then my cookies bake and I get these scary little Halloween Cookies.

I'm trying to make my own 'hard bits' this year.  I've put some dark brown sugar in a plastic bag.  I sealed it and left it to get hard.  Then I broke it up into little pieces.  The best are like the ones in the light brown sugar that have formed naturally.  They are like little pieces of amber and they melt when you cook them.

Dough rolled out, see the brown spots?

The tray on top is ready to go in the oven, the one on bottom just came out.

Ready for their close up.

That's right.  I got it off of Food Network and have loved it for years.  I don't ice my cookies and they taste wonderful.  I make them early in the month and try to keep some on hand for a silly treat.

I look forward to the holidays for the special treats like gingerbread. Thanks for sharing the recipe. The use of the hard bits of brown sugar is a most charming idea.
I know what you mean about not caring for the scary, and of preferring what's pleasant instead. Late September and all of October right up to the 31st is for me a time of keen unhappiness. There is so much ugliness about when you're driving down the street, in the shop windows, inside of the stores -- all around there is this clash of unwholesome color combinations and displeasing images. November 1 cannot come too soon for me!

Your cookies look wonderful and yummy. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I'm not a fan of Halloween at all and really don't participate. But I LOVE Fall and all the beautiful colors of the season. Oh, and your trivets look great. What a neat collection. I'm your newest follower! Have a good rest of the week.

Hi C. Joy, Thank you for your visit and sweet comment. Clotheslines are a thing of the past. I too loved the smell of clothes off the line.
Your scary cute cookies are so much fun. I know they must taste delicious. Since we moved to the mountains we do not have trick or treaters here. Too few homes and dark mountain roads is the problem. I miss them.

XO, Jeanne

You did make me laugh this morning. So that ad in Germany didn't make you leap out of bed for a yoghurt - what's wrong with you :-) Maybe it was that they were getting a yog instead of smoking after sex?

See what you have done now, I want cookies!!!
Good morning my dear :-)

I'll be gone for Halloween this year, boo, hoo!!!

No baking or having fun with the Trick or Treaters sadly. Hope they don't smash my pumpkins when I don't answer the doorbell - more hopefully, DH will be home and have the candy ready!

Love the freckled cookies - bet they are yummy!

Hi Joy!! I thought I'd say, that I have WAY, TONS of small scraps. I still have drawers of scraps that were sent to me by bloggers for my begging quilt I showed a couple of weeks ago. I saved all of those scraps, plus what I already had.....it is a bit overwhelming to think this is a scrap buster, and well....I can not tell any scraps have been busted. Yardage, well...that is another story. I have told myself not to buy anymore fabric.....it is hard!!

I really like this process...it is a relaxing form of sewing. I am going to start another as soon as I have all the blocks done for this one. I may try and be a bit more selective on the scraps and colors used. I used green for my main (what she called) focal color. And I am not a green person!! I just had some of that and decided to use it. These crumb quilts remind me of the crazy quilts. I am liking them a lot!!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your OCCUPATION: Doer of good deeds. YES! YES! And whatever we do outside the home, as mundane and frustrating as it could be or as rich and joyful as it is, GOODNESS and love will always be a good recommendation on our resumé of life! THANK YOU for reminding me of that, and for being number 999!

I too believe in promoting life and joy, not fear and death. There is enough of that to go around, so I don't need to add my two cents to that!

Thank you for visiting and GOD BLESS YOU!!! Anita
